Announcing “The Picture Online”

January 5, 2009

The past six years since launching my Hermosawave Picture of the Day website has been a great ride of new experiences and opportunities. The site opened up new avenues for creative expression and also created more synergy among all the other digital things I do, as well as more hyphenations in my job description.

As I’ve navigated the world of digital photography, I realized that my years of web design/digital media experience brings a unique approach to my photography and a unique perspective from which to contribute to the online community.

So I am thrilled to announce a new blog, “The Picture Online,” in which I will discuss photography, the World Wide Web and how they work together. Targeted to photographers and those that enjoy photography, I intend to recount my experiences creating photographs so that everyone can enjoy, learn and appreciate.

Hope you enjoy it and I look forward to your comments.

Hermosa Beach Art Walk on Saturday

artwalkicon.jpgJune 21 is the 5th Annual Hermosa Beach Art Walk.

Last year the ArtWalk turned into an all-day event and this year it has moved to the grass in front of the HB Community Center (Pier Ave. school for you old-timers :-)

I’ll have some photos on display, so come along and say hello!

Looks like it will be a very warm day, a respite from the inland heat.

A Great Weekend of Volleyball

June 9, 2008

Sean RosenthalBeautiful weather and the prelude to the Beijing Olympic Games set the stage for a great four days of beach volleyball.

Thursday were the qualifying rounds for the last eight slots in the main draw, for those players trying to make the jump to the big leagues. I have made a few friends in that category since I started shooting volleyball and it was nice to see them working out. The reigning AVP champs Kerri, Misty, Phil & Todd make it look so effortless, but when you start on Thursday you realize the size of the pyramid they are standing atop.

It was also a good way to test my shooting strategies and get my timing set — those players are not near the ball for very long, and I surprised myself at how well I was able to time and focus my shots this weekend.

For the first time in a decade the AVP charged admission to the three main courts, which created a situation Friday and Saturday of large crowds on the outer courts, enjoying a soulful volleyball experience; and thin crowds on center court, which meant you could get a great seat to a more “professional” experience. Here are links to my shots of Friday morning, Friday afternoon, and Saturday morning. You can probably tell I preferred shooting at the outer courts, where I could frame my shots with surf and blue sky in the background. But I have to say I really like being a spectator in the stadium, where emotions are higher and the drama is more, uhh… dramatic.

By Sunday of course, all the action was on the main courts, which meant getting a seat up high in the stands to enjoy both the ocean waves and breezes; and the incredible volleyball performances on the sand, punctuated by MC Jeeter’s informative ramblings. I can just imagine the stories he’ll have to tell when he gets to be Vin Scully’s age.

All in all, a great time! If you didn’t get enough volleyball this weekend, the AVP will be back in Long Beach in July and Manhattan Beach in September. They will be playing in Beijing August 9~22.

Volleyball Time Again!

Fiesta Hermosa This Weekend!

May 23, 2008

IMG_5517.jpg

This weekend is Fiesta Hermosa, running Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 10am-6pm.

If you’re in the neighborhood, drop by and say hello! My booth will be where it has been for the past six years, at the center of Pier Plaza in front of Il Boccaccio.

I will have large prints of many of the latest photos hanging on display, at special show prices, along with free 2008 calendars while they last.

Hermosa does get jammed, so walking or a pleasant bicycle ride down The Strand is the best way to get there. if you are driving and not very early take a look at the free parking & shuttle bus. You can also use walk to the shuttle from the end of the Metro Green Line.
